More small stones

As the year winds down, I’m still in the throes of my husband’s reduced physicality as a result of his Grand Canyon accident a little more than one month ago. He’s been suffering pain in his back for about ten days, though today he has said for the first time he’s feeling much better.

After writing small stones every day since last August I stopped writing them on November 16 – the day of his accident, and I didn’t resume until exactly one month later – December 16.

We still had a long way to go. Look at all the switch backs.

Here are my November small stones – that our group named November Pearls.

November Pearls

  1. My stress level is at its peak, this being the last week before the election. I need massage, meditation, Yoga, Pilates, and a sauna. Did I leave anything out?
  2. A power outage today inspires me to take some time away from the internet.
  3. I celebrate the Cubbies winning the 2016 baseball World Series. They last won in 1908, the year my mother was born.
  4. Another hot, still, sunny day in southern California. Will summer never end here?
  5. As if in answer to yesterday’s question, we woke up to dripping fog with almost nil visibility. I walked to the beach careful not to slip on the sleek pavement.
  6. Pilates wasn’t as grueling this morning. Maybe my body is getting used to my new twice-a-week class routine.
  7. I’m working at Hillary’s phone bank this afternoon to help get out the vote. Maybe doing something useful will calm my nerves about the tomorrow’s election.
  8. I voted quickly, painlessly with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. This is the most important election of my life. Hopefully we’ll break that glass ceiling today.
  9. I’m in mourning today for Hillary and for my country. Tomorrow it will be time to start moving on.
  10. It’s raging hot again in Los Angeles. I think we’re having a second summer.
  11. A favorite poet/singer/recording artist died last night. I’ll always remember his rendition of Hallelujah, among others. Rest in peace, Leonard Cohen.
  12. The ride along the ocean to Santa Barbara is picture-perfect. A clear cloudless sky and a deep blue sea. The only flaw endless traffic.
  13. A beautiful family wedding last night with boundless love in the air.
  14. I’m on my way to fulfill one of the oldest items on my bucket list walk down the Grand Canyon. I’ll keep you all posted on how it goes, depending on wifi connections.
  15. I saw the supermoon last night, appearing closest to the earth since 1948. As it rose above the horizon it looked orange, and as it got higher it turned to white. A spectacular sight.
  16. This is the day of the Grand Canyon hike down. I’m excited, nervous, and anxious to get going. Tomorrow I’ll be hiking up. See you at the end.
