What My Children Taught Me About Love

by Valerie Nifora

When my first son was born, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Motherhood was not something that I ever thought I would tackle. What I learned in the sleepless nights, skinned knees, fevers and hospital visits, was that I love my sons in a way that I never thought possible. What my children have taught me about love, is it is limitless.

It’s amazing how being responsible for another human life, the dialog quickly changes about your own. With children, there is no time for selfish reflections and unnecessary whining about existence. It’s incredible how petty things that used to cause consternation no longer seem relevant. Someone else has to come before you. What my children have taught me about love is that it is selfless.

And, who among us has ever had to tell a child their behavior was not acceptable only to watch their hearts be crushed with an onslaught of tears? There’s nothing more heart wrenching than watching a child’s intent not lineup with expectations.  What my children have taught me about love, is that it is forgiving.

It is without hesitation that I have to admit that my children have made me a better human being. They constantly require that I think about my words and actions. They look to me to guide and nurture them and to prove a worthy example of what it means to be an adult. Each day that I get to spend with them is a tremendous gift. And every day that they are in my life, I feel blessed. What my children teach me about love is, it’s the greatest miracle in the world.

Book Summary:

I Asked the Wind: A Collection of Romantic Poetry is a journey into romance, love and loss through poetry. The poems published in this collection span over 15 years of writing. Often starting with short rhythmic patterns, each poem’s lyrical tone is filled with inspired words to express the deep emotion experienced in the intricacies of romance.

Handwritten in a journal and hidden away until this publication, the poems chronicle the journey into and out of love. Written in three parts, the book enables the reader to transverse the intensity of romantic love, from the first moment of falling in love, to the intense pain of heartbreak.

Beautiful and powerful in its lyrical and simple verse, the reader is immediately immersed in a world of sensuality, passion, desire, and innocence; all woven together into a tapestry of human emotion. Each poem transports the reader to a story through the art of poetry. Drawing on natural elements such as the sun, sand, wind and moon, this collection explores the light and darkness of romantic love, leaving the reader questioning if love was ever real at all.
